Defence Investment
What does the government’s investment in defence mean for you and your area?

In the UK the defence industry supports:
460,000 UK jobs – that’s one in every 60 jobs
270,000 jobs in wider UK industry
24,000 apprenticeships across the country
What does this mean for you?
We’re investing more money in key defence areas and regions across the UK to create good jobs, solve skills shortages and make the UK safer at home and stronger abroad.
This means working with local councils, devolved governments and private companies to make sure defence spending benefits communities everywhere.
This isn’t just about keeping the UK safe – it’s about creating jobs, boosting local economies, and building a more secure future for you and your family.
National security is the first duty of the government.
The Prime Minister has committed to:
- Increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP from April 2027
- Set an ambition to reach 3% in the next parliament
- Strengthen our armed forces with cutting-edge British technology
- Creating jobs and opportunities across all areas of the UK
